In 1978, Bruno Leone learned the art of “guarattelle” from Nunzio Zampella, the last Neapolitan master of this tradition. In doing so, he helped save from oblivion a form of puppet theatre whose roots can be traced back to medieval strolling players, jugglers and acrobats.

Guarattelle is a traditional Neapolitan puppet theatre — lively, direct and closely connected with its audience. Its strength lies in combining old stories with current events, humour, improvisation and commentary on everyday life. By embracing the plots, rhythm and style of this theatrical form, Bruno Leone has made a significant contribution to the revival of a genre that is an important part of the cultural heritage of Naples and Europe.

The central figure of the performance is Pulcinella — a streetwise character: clever, fearful, cheeky and full of life. He manages to escape death and mock power, violence and arrogance, while carrying within himself all the emotions of ordinary people. His extraordinary, piercing voice is produced with the help of a secret instrument called the pivetta.

In one of the stories, Pulcinella plays a serenade for his beloved Teresina. But a fierce dog, a greedy landlord, the police and a death sentence by hanging stand in his way. Will Pulcinella manage to save his life and marry Teresina?
