The main inspiration for the performance "Nosferatu – The Plague Diary" was the film "Nosferatu – A Symphony of Horror" directed by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, with a screenplay by Henrik Galeen. It was the first film adaptation inspired by Bram Stoker’s novel "Dracula."
In our interpretation and staging of this theme, we aim to emphasize the phenomenon of the plague — a mysterious illness that strikes the residents of Wisborg en masse. Ever since Nosferatu appeared in the town, many of its inhabitants have been afflicted with a strange condition that causes them to hover between life and death. By day, they are drained of energy and apathetic, incapable of action. By night, they briefly come alive, only to slip back into lethargy.
Our production does not focus on the essence of vampirism but instead reflects on modern societies that live like zombies. The performance is realized using an original technique of manual cinema. The film reel is set in motion by the actor's hands, while shadow puppets appear on the screen. A particularly intriguing element is the creation of the performance space itself — the venue where the show takes place.
The spectacle is presented inside a specially designed theatrical trailer — our traveling cinema-theatre on wheels — which we take to different locations. The audience is invited inside the trailer. Enclosing viewers in a small space helps to evoke the sensation of being inside a cabinet of horrors and intensifies the emotions… and the fear of the plague lurking outside.
